When Is the Best Time to Book a Flight?

How far ahead to book domestic, international and holiday flights, and why there is no single magic booking date.

Quick answer

For most domestic trips, booking roughly one to three months ahead gives a good balance of choice and price; for international and holiday travel, start earlier. Fares are set flight by flight, so treat these as rules of thumb, not guarantees.

Domestic flights

Airlines usually open schedules about 11 months ahead. Prices tend to be most competitive when a flight is a few weeks to a few months from departure, and rise as the cabin fills up in the final two weeks. Business routes (for example, between two large cities on weekdays) rarely get cheaper at the last minute because business travelers book late and accept higher prices.

International flights

For long-haul trips, especially in summer, start looking three to six months ahead. Visa processing, passport renewal and limited nonstop options all argue for planning earlier. Our international flight checklist covers the paperwork side.

Holiday and event dates

Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, major sports events and festivals all create fixed-date demand spikes. For these trips book as soon as your plans are firm, and check for flexible-date options either side of the peak days.

What about watching prices?

Tracking a route for a week or two can show you whether prices are drifting up or down, but waiting never guarantees a drop. If a fare fits your budget and the airline allows free cancellation within 24 hours of booking (see the 24-hour rule guide), booking and re-checking is a lower-risk strategy than waiting.

Seasonal patterns

Beach destinations are priciest in winter, mountain destinations in ski season, and Europe in summer. Shoulder seasons, such as April to May and September to October for Europe, often combine lower fares and fewer crowds.

Frequently asked questions

Do flight prices go down on certain days of the week?

Prices can differ by the day you fly more than the day you search. Midweek departures are often cheaper, but there is no reliable weekday to search.

How early should I book for Thanksgiving or Christmas?

Book as soon as your plans are fixed. Holiday flights fill quickly and prices rarely fall as the date approaches.
